Temple and market streets
Silom Road around Pan Road and Silom Soi 20, including Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and the morning-market lane.
Silom (สีลม) here means the western-central blocks around Lalai Sap, Silom Soi 20, Pan Road, the Jewelry Trade Center and Neilson Hays Library—not the whole road, subdistrict, nightlife area or business district. Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and the gem trade give these blocks their clearest identity, while two markets and the library work to separate timetables. Choose one or two places after checking current access; the links between them have not been assessed as a continuous or step-free walk.
Details may change — verify before visiting.
This western-central stretch of Silom changes purpose by the hour, moving between morning buying, lunchtime trading, Hindu worship, gem work and reading.
The Hindu temple and the gem trade explain this part of Silom more clearly than a single business-district label. Sri Maha Mariamman Temple grew from worship within a South Indian Tamil community, while the surrounding blocks contain the Jewelry Trade Center (อาคารจิวเวลรี่ เทรด เซ็นเตอร์), the GIT museum and manufacturers working with diamonds, gemstones, pearls and precious metals.
The manufacturing figures give that identity a practical base: nine factories employ 807 workers, and each of the five named examples makes jewelry. The Jewelry Trade Center has 54 floors, while the museum inside nearby ITF Tower explains the processes behind the trade—from mineral origins and grading to cutting, polishing and finished pieces.
The markets run to different clocks. Lalai Sap belongs to the office lunch break in the 2018 district description and the 2020 tourism article. Silom Soi 20 appears through one morning visit in 2025. They may both be operating, but those dated accounts do not justify promising a particular day or hour.
Neilson Hays Library changes the pace again. Its association began in 1869, and the present building opened in 1922 after Dr Thomas Heyward Hays commissioned it in memory of Jennie Neilson Hays. It gives the visit an ending based on reading or an event rather than another transaction.
A cattle trader named Vaiti helped turn a wooden shrine into the temple that now marks the head of Pan Road.

This is an approximate western-central Silom area around Lalai Sap, Pan Road, Silom Soi 20 and 21, the Jewelry Trade Center and Neilson Hays Library. It is not the whole of Silom Road or Silom subdistrict, and it does not take in every office, nightlife street or attraction commonly marketed under the Silom name.
Loading the real boundary…

The blocks around ITF Tower, the Jewelry Trade Center, Silom Soi 21 and Lalai Sap at Silom Soi 5.
Neilson Hays Library on Surawong Road belongs to this destination; Chong Nonsi Station is useful for orientation, not a promise of continuous access.
The destination lies around Silom Road, Lalai Sap at Silom Soi 5, Pan Road, Silom Soi 20 and 21, and the adjoining part of Surawong Road. Chong Nonsi Station (สถานีช่องนนทรี) can orient an eastern approach, but the BTS map does not describe the onward crossings or paths.
Treat these as separate choices, not a promised walking route. Check the market, temple, museum, gallery or library directly, then choose the relevant station exit, crossing and return for that one destination.
Parking depends on the stop. Neilson Hays Library has limited on-site parking, so a taxi or public transport avoids depending on an available space.
Check the market first, then decide whether temple access and activity make a respectful visit possible.
Check the museum’s working-day arrangements and Lalai Sap’s current trading pattern separately.
Choose according to the current exhibition, library programme and closing time rather than trying to include both automatically.
Lalai Sap is also identified as Soi Surasena and Silom Soi 5, so signs and map labels may not use the same wording.
Pan Road meets Silom Road at the temple entrance, where ordinary street movement gives way to worship and ceremonial activity.
Inside the GIT museum, look beyond finished jewelry to the displays on grading, cutting, polishing, synthetic stones and manufacturing tools.
At either market, notice where buyers queue, carts pass and food changes hands before choosing a place to stop.
Vegetarian and vegan food with dishes around ฿100–200.

Japanese izakaya food; check the current menu and opening before going.
A bakery and café on Pan Road centred on artisan sourdough.
Chongqing-style hotpot with a supplied price band of about ฿400–500.
Forty-three restaurants fall inside the boundary, while 36 have individual entries. These names are not a live directory, so check current opening before making a trip for one.
Nine factories employ 807 workers within the boundary. The five named factory examples all make jewelry using materials such as diamonds, gemstones, pearls, gold, platinum and silver.
Restaurant prices, museum fees and market prices may change; check before ordering, booking or travelling for one venue.
Timing, crossings and the purpose of each place matter more here than completing a checklist. Plan one destination first and keep enough time for a changed market, ceremony or programme.
Dress modestly, follow posted rules and leave worshippers room to complete rituals without being photographed.
The selling lanes are working spaces; keep carts and queues moving before stopping to look or take a picture.
Market lanes and festival gatherings can compress around stalls and crossings, so keep valuables where you can see them.
Events can change which rooms are available. Voice level, seating and photography follow the library’s current instructions.
The connection to the station has not been assessed for every surface or crossing, so plan the return from the specific stop you choose.
Choose the time according to the destination: morning for the Soi 20 question, lunch for Lalai Sap, working-day hours for the gem museum, or the library’s published daytime hours.
One stop can take about an hour. Allow up to half a day for two places after checking their schedules and the journey between them.
